Step into Spring Art Fairs

25 Mar 2022 Step into Spring Art Fairs

Even though there's been much talk about virtual art fairs and online viewing rooms, The Cultivist's unanimous – we tend to prefer seeing art in the flesh. We're happy to report that all over the globe, the art fair circuit has bounced back and is in healthy shape.

If the coming of spring as a metaphor of creative regeneration appeals to you, too, there are a handful of art fairs we would strongly recommend. In Milan, contemporary art, modern art and limited edition design meet at miart, in a exhibition venue designed by architect Massimiliano Fuksas. Titled primo movimento, as a reference to a symbolic start of a new phase, the 26th edition is led for the second time by Nicola Ricciardi. This time around, miart welcomes 151 galleries from 20 different countries. (Milan, Italy, April 1-3)

In Paris, two fairs take place this spring, one the oldest design fair in the world; the other, a brand-new offshoot of Art Basel. PAD – short for Paris Art Design –  was created in 1998. Returning for its 24th edition in 2022, it remains a leading and unmissable event for international design collectors looking for historical, modern and contemporary design in a beautiful setting. (Paris, France, April 5-10). Careful not to lose Paris' idiosyncratic spirit, the latter fair, organized by the Swiss-based group that runs the international art fair giant, was baptized Paris+. It will focus on historical continuity and cultural context, with a roster of 170 art dealers. (Paris, France, April 6-10)

Asian art takes center stage at Art Basel Hong Kong, which experimented with a successful virtual art fair in 2020, and a hybrid model of digital participation and on-site attendance in 2021. For 2022, the fair's original March dates have been pushed forward to May 25 - 29 in response to the pandemic situation and related regulations in Hong Kong.

Four art fairs take place at the same moment as New York Art Week in May, with over 350 visiting galleries taking part. If you'd like passes for Independent Art Fair (May 5 - 8), TEFAF New York (May 6 -10), the Whitney Biennial (Apr 6 - September 5) and Frieze New York (May 18 - 22).
