08 Jan 2026 5 Must-Sees During Mexico City Art Week

ZONAMACO 2026 returns as one of the most vibrant and influential moments on the global art calendar, transforming the city into a dynamic hub of exhibitions, fairs, and cultural events. From major museum openings to cutting-edge gallery presentations, the week brings together international collectors, curators, and artists alongside Mexico’s thriving creative community.

Bosco Sodi's Sisyphus at Casa Wabi Sabino

Inspired by Albert Camus’s The Myth of Sisyphus, this exhibition situates Bosco Sodi’s practice within an existential dialogue with raw materials such as earth pigments, volcanic stone, fibers, and clay, where process and chance guide creation. Presented across four floors of Sabino 336, Sisyphus explores the polarities of his work, revealing a continual return to gesture, materiality, and the act of making.

Leonora Carrington at OMR

Leonora Carrington’s work occupies a singular place within Surrealism, shaped by her interest in mythology, alchemy, feminism, and the unconscious. Blending fantastical creatures, dreamlike landscapes, and esoteric symbolism, her paintings and writings construct alternative worlds that challenge patriarchal narratives and linear logic.

Gregor Hildebrandt presents Gilardi Lilien (Gilardi Lilies) at Casa Gilardi, featuring approximately 40 works created between 2005 and 2025. Still owned by the family who originally commissioned Luis Barragán, the iconic house becomes an active participant in the exhibition. Offered here is a curatorial overview of the artist’s work, presenting pieces that he selected or created in direct dialogue with the architect’s work and the house itself. Most of the works on view belong to his iconic Rip-off Paintings series, composed of abstract or geometric compositions made by placing and adhering the magnetic coating of audio or video tapes onto canvas.

Chapter VIII: Hallucinations unites the practices of Trevor Paglen and Troika to explore how technology shapes perception and the construction of reality. Paglen exposes hidden visual infrastructures, while Troika examines the systems that organize and simplify the world. Together, their works question where perception ends and design begins.

Sarah Crowner at Galerie Nordenhake

This two-part exhibition by Sarah Crowner foregrounds the intentional contrast between linear “zigzag” works and fluid, curved forms in her paintings, and is presented across two locations, each emphasizing a distinct formal approach. Curated by Crowner, the first location showcases non-geometric, linear, sharp-edged works, while the second location presents Crowner’s solo and previously unseen works, focusing on curves and natural forms.

Together, these exhibitions underscore Mexico City’s role as a vital crossroads where historical legacies, material experimentation, and technological inquiry converge. As ZONAMACO 2026 unfolds, it affirms the city not only as a destination during art week, but as a continually evolving center of global cultural dialogue.
